LPW’s upgraded AM metal powder capabilities unveiled at AM America

EEF represents British manufacturers, supporting them to thrive, innovate and compete locally and globally, and competition for the annual awards is fierce.  LPW, which supplies metal powders for 3D printed items as diverse as cranial implants for the medical sector and parts for Formula 1 cars, was runner-up in the ‘Developing People’ category.  The judges recognised the significant work the company is undertaking to manage change in the workplace as it prepares to move to its new, £20 million manufacturing facility in Venture Fields, Widnes.

LPW and Additive Industries sign partnership agreement to deliver integrated Powder Management solutions

LPW and Additive Industries are delighted to have signed their partnership agreement to deliver integrated Powder Management solutions for the MetalFAB1 Additive Manufactuirng machine.

PowderTrace, the smart hopper designed and manufactured by LPW for the safe storage and transport of metal powders has been designed into the MetalFAB1 integrated additive manufacturing machine from Additive Industries. Integration of PowderTrace enables safe loading of AM metal powders and in combination with Additive Industries’ powder removal system this minimises the risk of contamination and of operator contact with metal powder.

The agreement was signed at the LPW stand during a very busy formnext 2017.

LPW Technology is taking AM metal pLPW LPW's New factory for metal AM powder manufactureowder manufacture to a new level.  Formnext 2017 sees it unveiling its new ranges of clean powders manufactured exclusively for AM at its purpose-built ‘factory of the future’ near Liverpool, UK.

LPW’s new £20 million state-of-the-art facility, will house atomisers capable of making small to medium volumes of very clean powders, primarily custom titanium, nickel, cobalt, aluminium, and steel alloys.  The powder manufacturing facility has been designed to control contamination at every step of the process, with segregation of cells for specific material production. The powder manufacturing facility will be operated under cleanroom conditions with contamination controlled to a degree never before seen in the manufacture of AM metal powders.

“At LPW we view AM from the perspective of the powder,” comments Dr Phil Carroll, LPW’s founder and CEO.  “At formnext we’ll be showcasing our new production capability, assuring manufacturers operating in safety-critical sectors that our atomisation equipment has been designed to engineer out the risk of contamination in our AM metal powders.”

LPW Technology Inc relocates to provide enhanced range of services

LPW US New FacilityLPW Technology’s US operation is moving to a new, larger facility near Pittsburgh, PA.

John D Hunter, General Manager of LPW Technology Inc., comments, “Given the comprehensive range of AM metal powders we provide, the quality of our laboratory services and the effectiveness of our life cycle powder management systems, along with the increased demand from the AM industry, we have outgrown our current facility.”

LPW Inc is moving into a 12,000 sq. ft. (1,115 m2) factory in Imperial, PA, on October 23, 2017. “We’re also increasing our analytical and reconditioning capabilities to improve our customer’s reuse of their powders – we’re adding a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to our new, larger laboratory, and setting up two parallel reconditioning lines of sieves, blenders, and packaging lines to process powders and recertify them to the original specifications. We will continue to maintain a large inventory of metal powders for shipment within 24 hours of receiving an order” adds John.

LPW Technology achieves ISO 13485 for medical devices quality management systems

Medical devices ISO 13485 quality management systems logoLPW Technology Ltd, the market leader in the development, processing and supply of high quality metal powders and software solutions for the Additive Manufacturing (AM) industry, has again achieved certification to ISO 13485 standard for medical devices at its UK facility.

Successful certification to this standard requires the due diligence of everyone in the organisation to complete their roles to the highest of values, following the requirements of ISO 13485, and LPW’s procedures and systems.  LPW achieved the standard with no critical, major or minor non-conformances.

LPW New AM metal powders manufacturing HQ build completed

Portal Construction has completed a 90,000 sq ft facility at Widnes Waterfront for advanced manufacturing technology firm LPW.

The project, which was developed by DB Symmetry in a joint venture with Halton Council, has reached practical completion, with LPW set to relocate to the site from its current Runcorn headquarters.

LPW will move 70 staff into the new facility, with plans to create more than 120 new jobs at the site. The manufacturing firm agreed a £20m pre-let for the facility in March this year.

Portal Construction worked with AEW Architects, Tier Consulting, C4 Consulting and KGA on the scheme.

B8 Real Estate and CBRE advised DB Symmetry. LPW was represented by Aherne Property Consultants and advised by Zaman Roberts and Black Cat Building Consultancy.

Phil Carroll, chief executive at LPW Technology said: “As a company which specialises in metal additive manufacturing, a tech clean, high specification space was mandatory and a new build was therefore the only option.

“The decision to relocate was a huge leap for our firm but from the outset, we had no doubt that DB Symmetry and Halton could deliver. With the build now complete, we’ll start our fit out in in the coming weeks and will relocate our operations in the New Year.”

Andrew Dickman, director of DB Symmetry, said: “This project is an exemplar of what can be achieved when the private and public sector collaborate.

“By regenerating this site, we have helped to bring a successful and growing company to the borough of Halton and, in doing so, will bring high skilled jobs to the area.”

Leader of Halton Council, Cllr Rob Polhill, added: “We look forward to LPW opening at Venture Fields and creating new jobs.

“This is a very important site for Halton, and the new Mersey Gateway bridge opening very soon will further improve connectivity for sites such as Venture Fields and will spearhead further investment in the borough.”

New AM datasheet from LPW highlights angle of repose testing for metal powders

LAngle of repose measurement with PowderFlowPW has published its latest laboratory services datasheet.  ‘Angle of repose testing for metal powders’ describes when this test is appropriate and explains how it is conducted.

“The angle of repose measurement offers a cost-effective method of characterising the flow properties of powders which don’t readily flow through standard test funnels,” says Lisa Holman, LPW’s Quality Engineer.  “Not every metal powder needs to flow, and this test method can provide a comparison against the powder’s historic performance and previous batches to confirm consistency.”

LPW undertakes angle of repose measurement at its in-house laboratories, and to enable end-users to assess powder flow on their own premises, LPW has developed PowderFlow.  The PowderFlow kit contains a complete suite of powder flow measurement techniques, including angle of repose, apparent density, Hall Flow and Carney Flow testing to relevant ASTM standards.

LPW’s brave duo raises nearly £1000 for cancer charities

Will Dawbarn, LPW’s Supply Chain Administrator, and Ciaran Farrell, Production Team Leader, decided to brave the tricky rotating barriers, the slippery pyramid and the intriguingly named arctic enema, among other obstacles, to raise money for the two charities closest to their hearts.

In the medical device industry where patients are relying on life-changing implants, it is critical that the components are both biologically compatible and mechanically reliable. One of the great benefits of metal additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, is the flexibility to design tailored parts with complex geometries to mold to a person’s individual makeup.

As important as the design shape of the implant, be that a hip, knee or shoulder joint, is the reliability of the bone replacement or strengthening component. The body is a chemically aggressive environment, with great strain being placed on the skeletal and muscular system so parts must be chemically inert and free from cracks or imperfections.

To achieve this degree of reliability requires confidence in the starting materials – the metal powders. It is critical to have powders that are known to be free of contaminants and low in oxygen to avoid variations in mechanical properties of ductility, tensile strength and hardness.

Exactech turned to LPW to ensure that the high quality titanium powders that they use in Additive Manufacturing are within the same stringent specifications before each repeat build.
